The Notre Dame Gate is a 17th century gatehouse built by the Knights of St John. The building itself has been lovingly restored and is an architectural gem. It is built on five levels making it the highest building in the region. The original building was erected during the time of construction of the Floriana fortifications in the 1700’s. This historic building has taken many turns in history, before being transformed and operated as Malta’s first electricity production plant on the island. Originally, the Old Power House was utilized to store vats with fuel for lamps and was later converted into coal stores at the turn of the 20th century. This building is in reality a fascinating layer of spaces and reflects the multiplicity and variety of activities that has formed part of the Grand Harbour over the centuries. The rustic structure with high ceiling and architectural features of the building display an interesting contrast between old and new for a wide variety of events.
